Interfaces That Explain Themselves

Interfaces That Explain Themselves

By Jessica Chang

Some interfaces feel clear because they explain themselves through behavior. You change a setting and immediately understand what moved, what updated, and what stayed the same.

I try to design for that kind of cause and effect. The system should show enough relationship between action and result that the user does not have to guess.

This can be done with layout, motion, grouping, and progressive disclosure. Copy helps, but it should not be the only thing holding the explanation together.

An interface that explains itself feels calmer. It gives people a model they can carry into the next decision.
