Small Motion, Big Meaning

Small Motion, Big Meaning

By Jessica Chang

October work often gets crowded with polish, and motion can become a decoration pass. I try to resist that. The best motion usually has a job.

A transition can show where an object moved. A loading state can set the right expectation. A small pulse can tell the user that the system heard them.

I like to ask what the motion explains. If the answer is only that it makes the screen feel nicer, I usually reduce it or remove it.

Small motion works when it respects attention. It should make the interface easier to follow, not harder to ignore.
