Onboarding Is Product Strategy

Onboarding Is Product Strategy

By Jessica Chang

Onboarding is easy to frame as a set of introductory screens. I find it more useful to treat it as product strategy made visible.

The first session tells users what the product values. It can emphasize setup, trust, speed, learning, or control. Those choices shape how people understand the whole experience.

I try to remove anything that is only there because we are nervous. If the user can learn it naturally, the onboarding flow may not need to teach it.

Good onboarding does not explain everything. It creates enough confidence for the next meaningful action.
